Do this in December

We get so many questions about closing out your year and how to handle taxes. Here’s a quick list of what you’ll need to do in you Pink Office account to make your taxes easy breezy.

  1. Enter all of your sales for 2018. Mark every sales invoice as paid and delivered. If you have any invoices that weren’t paid, mark those as “write off debt.” This will appear on your “Tax info report” as “invoice bad debt.”
  2. Import or manually enter all inventory orders and mark them “create order and mark shipped.” Then add a payment to the order. This is the process that will save information to your financial records.
  3. Balance inventory levels. Make sure that what is on your shelf matches what is in your Pink Office inventory. If there is any question you can search your history for that item. Just find the product number in your inventory (you may need to check or uncheck “only show on hand”) and then click on “transaction history” in brown. This will show you everytime the product was bought and sold. Pretty handy.
  4. Contact customers for last minute gift ideas or if they need anything for their holiday look. You can even ask if they’d like to remain on  your mailing list. Remember, you pay to mail them things. If they truly aren’t interested you can spend that money more wisely. Archive customers you won’t be needing on your main list.
  5. Enter all extra income (probably commissions) in the money section.
  6. Enter all expenses in the money section.
  7. Once that is all done, take a look at your tax info report in the reports section of the app. You are all set for the new year!

It can be difficult to fit your business into a busy holiday schedule. Here are a few quick and easy ideas to work your business and enjoy the holidays at the same time.

  1. Be prepared with samples. You are going to likely be out an about more during this season than ever. Your chances for meeting new people are abundant. Take some time to prepare some samples with your business card attached and hand them out any chance you get. Some conversations will give you the opportunity to get her information too. Be sure to have a pen handy so she can jot down her number or be ready with your phone to save her contact information right on the spot. Another fun idea is to leave a few lipstick samples in the ladies’ room at holiday parties. Be sure to have your info attached!
  2. Schedule time for work. I know you have a ton of baking to do, the laundry is backed up, you need to decorate and the house is a mess…but don’t forget to schedule time for work. Look at your schedule and block out some time to make contact with your hostesses, call prospects for bookings and make time for actually holding appointments. Your clients and prospects are busy too…but they need new looks for holiday parties; they have beautiful new outfits that are going to look awful with their summer lip colors. It is your actual job to help these people! Post options on social media and offer to deliver products. You have to continue making contact with your clients even when you’re busy with the holidays. January you will totally say thank you.
  3. Don’t be afraid to talk about your business. You are going to be meeting new people at parties and family gatherings. Someone may ask “so Susie what do you do?” If your response is “I teach 3rd grade.” You just lost an opportunity to grow your business. Instead, try this “I teach 3rd grade and am actually really excited about growing my business with Mary Kay. I love teaching and helping people and Mary Kay offers me the ability to do both. Have you ever tried our skin care?” BAM…opportunity. But you have to have your words ready. You have to be confident. When you are growing your business you need to be ready to talk about it all the time. Your excitement will be contagious.

5 reasons to call customers in October

You need to sell some product, you need to touch base with some customers, you need to boost your upcoming holiday sales. October is the perfect month to call your existing customers. 

  1. The seasons are changing and so is their skin. Contact your customers about reprogramming their skin care for dryer winter months.
  2. Everyone loves a new fall color look. Call our customers to offer to refresh their colors from summer to fall. Offer them a free color consultation tell them about new products and collections. Be sure to let her know that she can invite friends to earn free product.
  3. Call to let your customers know about your holiday products and services you offer. Do you gift wrap and deliver for free? Do you offer any discounts or have a holiday open house. Contacting your customers with this information is a great idea. If you do a mailer or send out a social media invite it’s ok to actually make contact with those customers. Real conversations give you the chance to cover all your bases at once.
  4. Call to get wishlists. Chances are your customers want products they haven’t bought for themselves. Call to get a wish list that you can share with her husband or significant other. Entice her with a special gift just for providing the list.
  5. Update her information. You might be sending out Christmas cards or holiday open house invitations. If so, contacting your customers in advance to make sure you have her most current information is a perfect reason to initiate a conversation.

Isn’t it time to DO something?

My closet is full, my pantry is full, I am warm. I have a job, my husband loves me and he loves our children and he also has a job.

Last night I was at a store where you get everything for a dollar. A group of teen age boys was in line ahead of me. They were from the children’s home. For some reason or another they had to be removed from their own homes. One boy had three items and two dollars. The next lady in line gave him the extra dollar. One dollar stood between him and some cookies, a little happiness.

I sometimes let food expire.

Last night just before bed my freshman daughter came with tear filled eyes and a note she had hand written to give to a boy at school. He’s moved from foster home to foster home and now lives in a boys’ home. Behavior issues have made it so that he can no longer stay there and will be moving out of state to live with the friend of his mother. His mother is in prison, his father in a half way house in another sate. She asked if she had done enough to show this broken boy love. She’s given him a Bible, friendship and from what I understand a ton of patience.

There are presents wrapped for my daughters under our Christmas tree.

It’s hard for a kid to understand why they have so much, and others have so little.

This holiday season, whether you celebrate Christmas or Chanukah or any other holiday, consider those with less.

I don’t mean those with a smaller TV, or who drive a minivan instead of an SUV. I mean those who truly have less.

Consider those who don’t have a hot meal, a bed, a home, a job. Consider those who don’t have the arms of a loving mother to fall into, those whose lives have been shaken by abuse, suicide and mental illness.

Let this holiday season be the beginning of something new in our own hearts. Something that won’t just be a December tradition, but something we’ll do all year long.

I know of a few great organizations, but even more exist in your local area. Churches have food pantries and free clothing. Local shelters need volunteers. You have options.

Take just a minute to google “women’s shelters in my area.” You’ll find a list of places that help women and children find safety and comfort right in your local area.

With all the talk of sexual harassment all the oppression that for so  many years women have turned the other cheek on, it’s time we all DO something.

 

December time management: Stress free Christmas

Owning your own business at the Holidays can be a super stressy time, as if the holidays aren’t stressful enough!

As the woman of the house you’re likely the head decorator, the lead chef, the baker in chief, the CEO of shopping, the party planner extraordinaire AND you own your own business! That’s a lot.

Being a good time manager is the key to keeping the stress low and having a great time over the holidays.

December Week 1

Contact your customers, post on social media, have skin care classes and parties galore. Provide wrapped gifts as add ons at every party and every individual close. Get wish lists and contact husbands, boyfriends and significant others if you haven’t already done this. Setting office hours to wrap gifts, make calls and create posts will help reduce stress. Decide the hours you’re going to work in your office, what ever times work best for you. Work those hours and walk away. If an order, phone call or notification come in, let it go. You’ll get it next time your in your office or when you’re not with those you love. When office hours are over, bake, decorate, wrap and shop. This is your time with your family.

December Week 2 

Post the last day you’ll deliver on whatever social media you use to communicate with your followers. Will you make deliveries on the 22nd or 23rd? Will you wrap gifts past the 23rd? Make decisions for your business early on so that you don’t end up in a situation where you have to say no. You don’t want to lose any sales, but being available early will help them think of you first instead of last. Continue to contact customers and work your business as usual until your designated date. When you set hours for yourself honor them. Honor them by working the hours your chose ahead of time and honor your family by ending them when you said you would. Close your office door behind you, shut off your computer, don’t reply to notifications, close your datebook. Your family will be grateful to have you completely present with them.

December Week 3

Make final deliveries, offer add ons and have them wrapped and ready. Deliver to offices and other places of business if possible, have business cards and samples with a little candy cane or something of the sort ready to give to anyone else you see when you make your delivery. Post on social media a last minute gift and remind your customers of your final delivery date. Work the hours you set and do all the other fun holiday stuff you planned before.

Let hostesses know you’re thankful for them.

The season of thankfulness is upon us. Many will begin a gratitude journal tomorrow. Our Facebook feeds will be full of daily thankfulness posts. I hope this November you remember to let your hostesses know you are thankful for them. Here are a couple of quick and fun ideas to help them know you love them!

  • Have a surprise hostess party. Every one has to purchase or sell at least $50 in product (or whatever amount you set.) Then every $10 after that (or whatever amount you set) gives her chances to win. Put all the chances in a bucket and draw one name. That surprise hostess will win whatever beautiful prize you decided in the beginning. Make it worth her time by making the prize big enough. You could even make this tiered based on how large the sales are.
  • Send out personal handwritten notes to each of your hostesses from the past year. Invite her to an exclusive event (your holiday open house) or give her a special discount on holiday items if she buys a certain amount. Let her know she was an important part of your year and encourage her to be a hostess again in the future.
  • Hand deliver mini satin hands to your top 3 hostesses from the year with a handwritten note letting her know how much you appreciate her as a hostess. Give her a small coupon to use and offer a holiday party makeover.

Christmas before Halloween

It’s hard to think of Christmas before Halloween, but when you own your own retail store, you have to.

Think about it. Crafts stores start selling their decorations, big toy companies send out their catalogs and web companies plan all year for their big holiday sales.

If the big businesses depend on holiday sales then you should be no different. In order to depend on those sales you have to plan on them.

If you don’t have your plan in place, drop what you are doing and plan now.

  1. Holiday craft shows for leads. Do a small give away (Satin hands maybe?) to get names in a drawing. Contact those leads right away for holiday makeovers.
  2. Have holiday gift bundles available at every appointment for easy purchase.
  3. Offer free gift wrapping and delivery.
  4. Plan an open house. Perhaps you want to do this with a complimentary retailer, clothing maybe? Her customers get to see what you have and your customers get to see her products as well.
  5. Have products on hand. Remember you’re not going to sell it if you don’t have it.
